Teeth Cleaning
Prophylaxis is the dental term for teeth cleaning. It is an important part of oral hygiene and involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities, gum disease, and bone loss. Routine cleanings and exams at Preferred Dental Care can help maintain a healthy mouth so that you can keep your teeth for a lifetime.
According to the Centers for Disease and Control, half of American Adults have periodontal disease. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. Often known as a silent disease because it does not hurt, it is important to be seen regularly by Dr. Tsang to help prevent it.
Brushing
Careful and frequent brushing helps prevent build-up of plaque bacteria on the teeth that can cause cavities and gum disease. It is recommended to brush twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening before bed, for 2 minutes.
Flossing
In addition to brushing, cleaning between teeth may help to prevent build-up of plaque bacteria on the teeth. This may be done with dental floss or interdental brushes. It is recommended to brush every evening before bedtime.
Most dentists recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned every six months. More frequent cleaning and examination may be necessary during treatment of dental and other oral disorders. Routine examination of the teeth is recommended at least every year. This may include select dental X-rays to help see cavities. We use digital X-rays to minimize the amount of radiation exposure. Digital sensors decrease the radiation dosage by 90%.
